A
Quick Bite of History
aris
is built on a wide curve in the Seine, a river that flows all
the way to the English Channel. The Seine divides the city into
two banks, north and south, with a couple of small but historically
significant islands.

ver
the past two millennia, the City literally outgrew its fortified
walls to encompass an increasing number of surrounding boroughs
and villages. It is now a dense network of some 6,000 streets
ranging from the narrow, winding passageways of the Marais on
the Right Bank, to the pedestrian streets of the Latin Quarter
on the Left Bank.

a large city, Paris kept its human feeling. Due to its being organized
in 20 districts, it could be compared to a collection of smaller
villages to which local dwellers have a strong sense of belonging.
